Shawlands is a popular, sought after area in the Southside of Glasgow which has lots to offer. Once upon a time the West End was seen as the sole place to be and spend your free time. Now though, there is far more to do on the South side of the Clyde than ever before. There is also ongoing improvements to the look of the area, such as the facelift of Kilmarnock Road where the pavements are being monoblocked, which is making Shawlands a more desirable place than ever to settle down and rent or buy a home.
Art Village
There is certainly no shortage of culture in the Southside with this artistic hub. The Art Village is open Tuesday – Sunday and is located in the Shawlands Shopping Centre on Kilmarnock Road. Its aim is to breathe some life back in to declining shopping districts and bring culture to the people on the Southside of Glasgow. This ‘cultural hub’ can also be utilised by art graduates to showcase their work and to reach a wider audience. It also aims to stimulate a general interest in art, design and work as a platform for community participation.
It also has kids and adult workshops and there it even boasts Scotland’s smallest cinema, known as “The Wee Cinema.” Here, you can view all different types of short films, from something serious to more light hearted, comedic clips. This cultural hub is well worth a visit if you ever find yourself in the Southside.
Glasgow Farmers Market
Looking for culinary inspiration? Fancy shopping for some fresh, local produce? Then look no further than Shawlands, where one of the few Farmer’s Markets left across Glasgow takes place every first and third Saturday of the month. The farmers market comes to Langside Halls, on the Southside and offers a range of fresh fruit and veg. It typically runs from 10am-2pm and more information can be found here.
Race for Life
If you are looking into raising money for a great cause, the well-known ‘Race for Life’ is coming to the Southside this May! It’s a 5k run, which is well suited to all and is a perfect opportunity to raise money locally for a great cause. Given that it is a couple of months away, there is still plenty of time to prepare and to raise donations in time for the big day! The race will kick off at 10am on the 22nd of May. More info can be found here.
These are just a few of the many things going on in Glasgow’s Southside. If you enjoy a great sense of community combined with culture, local markets and charitable events then perhaps Shawlands is the place for you. Why not check out our fantastic range of properties for sale in the area here.
