They say that moving house is one of the most stressful tasks most of us will undertake in our lives, and yet it simply doesn’t have to be this way. Firstly, because with an reliable estate agent by your side, a home sale or a home buy can be less overwhelming. Secondly because whilst packing up your entire home can seem a daunting prospect, with proper planning and organisation, it can be a much more manageable task.
These top 10 Clyde Property packing tips will help you make moving house as stress free as possible.
1. Have a clear out – Inevitably, we all hoard bits and pieces over the years, and depending on how long you’ve been living in the home you’re about to move from, there could be quite a substantial collection of bric-a-brac that you no longer use/ need. By being ruthless at this point, you can save yourself extra boxes to pack, carry, and unpack and free up storage space in your new home.
2. Plan for the worst, hope for the best – This old saying rings true when it comes to moving, preparation is key to a stress free move. Make lists of items to pack, keep a diary, making note of all important dates prior to moving day. Think of how long it will take to arrange and carry out the necessary tasks and add extra time just for safety onto that. This way you will have a bit of breathing space should any unexpected problems hit the move.
3. One step at a time or, one room at a time – One of the main ways to avoid being overwhelmed is to focus on one room at a time. And starting with the least used room, such a spare bedroom, can make sense as it allows you to get a head start without getting in the way of your daily routine.
4. Label everything – There is nothing worse than sitting in your new home, confronted by tens of boxes that you don’t know where to put – and have no idea what they contain. Labelling will help you keep control over the move – and save any stressing or arguments about where something is.
5. Group boxes together – Having labelled everything, make sure when you pack the moving van that you keep all of the boxes for each room relatively close to each other. It makes it easier when getting to the new house; the van can simply be unloaded room by room.
6. Use sturdy packing boxes – Carrying a box as it collapses and smashes is the stuff of nightmares, often resulting in irreplaceable family ornaments etc being broken. To avoid this, use thick, strong boxes than can take a bit of weight – but mind not to over pack them as you risk injuring yourself and the items within it.
7. Source moving boxes that won’t cost you a penny – Many shops nowadays advertise moving kits, but they cost a surprising amount of money and are ultimately an unnecessary cost. Simply go down to your local supermarket and ask at their Customer Service desk if they can keep some of the larger, sturdier boxes from their deliveries aside. Normally they will be happy to oblige (as they are only recycling them anyway) and you can go pick some boxes up within the week – for free!
8. Wrap everything – Ensure that valuables aren’t destroyed/broken in the moving process by wrapping any ornaments etc in newspaper or bubble wrap.
9. Keep essentials packed away separately – going to need things like your kettle and tea bags, toiletries and clothing etc out before old DVDs and photo albums. Just label a priority box and keep it to go in the moving van last so it comes out first and keep it on a safe spot.
10. Check out for insurance – Make sure that your insurance covers you for any contents that might break during the move.
Hopefully these tips will help aid any of you out there who are soon to be moving home in making it a bit less stressful.
