We all like to imagine what our dream home looks like; how it will be decorated where it will be located, how much space it will have, and what the architectural style will be.
And each of us have our own ideas of what constitutes the ‘perfect home’ based on our own aesthetics, lifestyles and needs. For some, it’s an elegant townhouse with period details in the heart of the city, whilst others prefer a modernist retreat in the country with floor to ceiling windows. For many with young families, it’s a spacious three-bedroom house in the suburbs with good links to public transport and a big garden for the kids to play in, and young professionals who are making their first steps into the market daydream about a penthouse in the city centre with sprawling views and lively restaurants and pubs around the corner.
But what are the features that Brits as a whole look for in their dream homes? Recent news has brought forward what people’s home would look like.
Most likely due to the notoriously small average UK home, buyers value extra space above all, with the most desirable ‘dream home’ features being en-suites in every bedroom (48%), a standalone TV room (48%), a generously sized kitchen with its own kitchen island (47%) and a huge garden (47%). Additional features which scored high on the study were walk-in wardrobes and dressing rooms (45%), a conservatory (38%), open fires and wood burning stoves (37%), a double front door (28%) and his and hers bathrooms (25%).
Another feature we dream about is a generous number of bedrooms, with 29% of those surveyed saying their dream home would have four bedrooms, while 27% wanted just three and 21% hankered after five rooms.

The study also showed that Brits would like their dream homes to have a touch of luxury, and many UK home owners would want their house to be filled with touches like a balcony (43%), followed by a relaxation room (39%), a personal library (35%), a gym (32%) or an indoor cinema (29%).

Both locations have scored 16% in the study, with the countryside (11%) and suburbs (10%) following close behind.
The takeaway from this research is that while most of us long for more space, it is ultimately each person’s individual lifestyle and preference that dictates what the dream home looks like and ultimately, when we think of our dream home, we think about what matters most to each of us.
