Thankfully, we don’t see too much in the way of extreme weather in the UK, however, storm damage does cost UK homeowners thousands of pounds each year. Following Storm Aileen last week and the fact we are heading into autumn/winter, when we all know the weather can make a turn for the worse, it makes sense to be as prepared as possible. When it comes to storm-proofing your home, here are a few tips to help protect your property and keep it secure in the face of bad weather.
Lock and secure outdoor items
As is common sense, anything outdoors in gardens, driveways and even window boxes on windowsills should be either secured down or locked away in garages or sheds. Garden furniture, ornaments and equipment that could cause damage or be broken in strong winds should be cleared away until bad weather passes.
Roof repairs
Now is a great time to pay attention to your roof to safeguard against leaks in heavy rain or losing loose tiles in strong winds. If you suspect there are some issues, call a recommended roofer out to do the job for you – we don’t recommend getting up there yourself! Jobs that are great to get done at this time of year including clearing gutters to prevent any blockages in heavy rain, replacing broken titles, and making sure any aerials and satellite dishes are well fixed. Any problems with chimneys should be dealt with too as this can prevent further leaks, damage and accidents. There is always the option to look into roof reinforcement if you suspect your property is particularly vulnerable to the elements.
Garden overgrowth
Another outside job is giving the garden a good tidy-up, particularly if you have a lot of overgrowth or larger bushes and trees that could be in danger of collapsing. Giving a tidy up can prevent debris from causing unnecessary damage and mess later on but remember larger trees should be tackled by a local tree surgeon for safety reasons. Whilst you are there, ensure any fences are sturdy and secure to help prevent further damage.
Window upgrade
Consider double or triple glazing if you don’t already have it installed – much more weather proof than single glazing and it will keep you warmer as we head into the winter months, improving the energy efficiency of your home.
During and after a storm…
If it gets particularly bad out there, drawing curtains can help protect yourself and your property in case of any window smashes. Other tips to keep in mind during a storm include keeping all windows, doors and shutters secured, unplugging unnecessary appliances to avoid a power surge and remembering to use candles safely in the event of a power cut. Once the weather clears, make sure to check for any leaks and inspect your roof to evaluate any damage and repairs needing done.
