Festive Décor for this Year’s Celebrations

Spending some time decorating your home can be a great way to get that festive feeling. Put your favourite Christmas songs on the stereo, look out those boxes of decorations and get creative this year! In need of some inspiration? Here are our top Christmas décor tips.

Amazing mantles

The Christmas mantelpiece is usually the decorative focal point in the living room, alongside the Christmas tree. Keep your stockings hanging for Santa but give a revamp for this year by hanging wreaths above fireplaces and using plenty of foliage adorned with pinecones, red berries and holly leaves. Add in candles and stacked wood to add to the cosy feel. Incorporating baubles, bows, fairy lights and festive flowers can all bring colour too. Take inspiration from the past, using vintage-looking pieces like lanterns and traditional toy decorations or go kitschy with your colour scheme and by using playful and unusual ornaments. If you don’t have a fireplace, create a focal point by decorating a bookshelf, side board or piano.

Christmassy centrepieces

Carry on your theme and colour scheme, or go for something completely new when it comes to your Christmas table centrepiece. The use of lots of foliage creates a bountiful table, but it might be more practical to keep it minimal, using candle groupings or cut flowers. Incorporating cake stands and decorating each layer adds height and interest as does using tall glass jars for candles or filled with colourful beading. A central platter holding bright baubles, flowers and greenery also works well or you could try a row of three mini Christmas trees adored with tiny decorations. Your table can be as paired back or as busy as you like – just remember to leave enough room to serve up dinner!

Spots for snuggling

Christmas is the time to get cosy! With lots of time spent indoors with family, you want to make sure there are plenty of areas for people to relax and enjoy. Bring in colour, texture and layers with Christmas inspired cushions, throws, blankets and other soft furnishings. Mix up fabrics like tartan, flannel, knits, wool and faux fur, bringing warmth to any living area. Reds, greens, golds and silvers are the traditional Christmas colours and snowflake prints or Santa patterns will always bring about some festive cheer to any room.

Sweet treats

Lots of lazing around requires snacking! You can incorporate food into your festive décor by placing colourful bowls or fruit, nuts and sweets around about. Platters filled with oranges, apples and pears are healthier options but glass jars with stripped candy canes or filled with shiny sweeties may be just as popular, as are sealed jars filled with home-baked cookies or gingerbread men. Place tea lights on a glass platter, surrounded by cranberries and garnished with pine twigs for an edible and elegant decorative piece.

The more the merrier

Don’t limit your decorative inspiration to family areas – spread the festivities throughout the home. Hallways are an ideal spot to hang garlands, wreaths and candle displays and ensure a welcoming and festive feel for any visitors. Use Christmas scents and winter-themed towels in bathrooms and pick up bedspreads in Christmas colours or patterns to use year upon year during the holiday period. Incorporating small touches here and there will ensure everyone feels in the Christmas spirit at home this year!
