Simplify Your Life and Declutter Your Home

Clutter affects us all. No home is immune from the odd collections of items that we seem to inadvertently collect over time: from the new build penthouses along Glasgow Harbour to the traditional Victorian terraces of Shawlands, we all fall prey to the temptation of getting attached to trinkets, books, memorabilia, accessories, clothes and so on.

Those bits and pieces that we gather over time can make our homes feel more crowded and claustrophobic if we don’t take a few simple steps to clean out unwanted items every so often however. And with the current focus on minimalism and simplifying our lives, tackling clutter seems the first step towards a less stressed life.

As well as making your space feel brighter, lighter and larger, clearing out your unwanted clutter could also have an impact on how you feel. Recent studies have found that high levels of clutter could even affect your mental health in some cases, so there is a possibility that clearing your living space could even help improve your mood.

With that in mind, here’s a quick guide to simplifying your life and decluttering your home!

Think about what you want to achieve by decluttering

Setting a clear goal for your declutter can help to focus your efforts and improve your motivation for the project. Just ask yourself the simple question, “Why do I want to declutter?” There a whole range of reasons why you might want to declutter your property, through from using space better to making your home feel more inviting. By focusing on a clear, end objective, you can improve the chances of successfully decluttering!

Make a map of areas that collect clutter in your home

When you’ve worked out your objective, it’s time to tackle your decluttering strategy. A particularly useful method is to make a simple map of your home and identify any particular areas that seem to collect clutter. This map can help you to identify which areas to start with. Rate each room on a scale of 1 to 5, with 1 being hardly any clutter and 5 being lots of clutter.

Take one room at a time

Decluttering an entire home can feel like a daunting task, so it’s best to pace yourself and carry out the project over a period of time rather than one day. Focus your decluttering efforts on one room at a time to avoid getting burnt out by the task.  Problem rooms to focus on will vary from property to property, but the usual suspects are the living room and the kitchen: two focal points of activity in the home that can collect a lot of clutter!
