In recent years local residents and business owners in the West End have complained about cluttered streets, poor street signs, inadequate lighting and roads and pavements in a state of disrepair along Byres Road. Take a look at the proposed changes and have your say.

Byres Road in Glasgow’s West End is a vibrant, bohemian shopping and residential area and is now set for a £9m transformation funded by the Glasgow City Region City Deal. The regeneration project aims to redesign the area to create a more attractive environment focusing on those who live, work and shop there.

The proposed designs incorporate widened footways, improved surfaces, reduced street clutter, attractive planters and more greenery, seated ‘social’ areas, safer, wider cycle routes, improved pedestrian crossings, a 20mph speed limit, reduced on-street parking and improved lighting for security.

One of the primary aims of this regeneration project is to reduce the dominance of cars, making the roads and pavements pedestrian friendly. In fact, following an initial survey, it was found that 69% of shoppers currently arrive by foot, bicycle or public transport and so the balance needed to be readdressed to allow for these cyclists and pedestrians.
