Forget Minimalism…This Year it’s all About Maximalism!

Maximalism is one of this year’s biggest interior trends. From bright bold colours and lush fabrics, to metallic and colourful patterns, this trend is the epitome of joy that can be expressed entirely through interior design.

For a long time people have stuck to a minimalist style for their home, but we are now seeing a 360 degree turn, resulting in luxury and glamour overtaking clean Scananavian lines, pale colours and a neutral colour palette.

This style can be a little intimidating and easy to get wrong. So how can you make maximalism work in your home?

Introduce it into your home slowly

maximalism

If you would like a colourful maximalist home, start small and see how you go. This will stop you from feeling overwhelmed and making mistakes. Start with some colourful cushions and throws, and work your way up to a bold wallpaper in one of your rooms or even a bright, bold sofa or armchair.

Plan carefully

It’s all about balance, and not going overboard without considering what will really work in your home. Think about what will work in the room, what colours work together, and what could overwhelm the room. Remember to keep your space looking balanced – you could even choose a theme so that there is some cohesion to the pieces that you choose. This could be as simple as floral or geometric prints.

Choose what you love

You might see something you love, but decide against it because it doesn’t ‘go’ with your existing colour scheme or style. However, maximalism is all about saying yes to what you love, even if it doesn’t match. Don’t feel pressured to buy into certain trends but go with what makes you happy and what turns your house into your home. Most people wouldn’t buy two different shades of green for example, but the contrast can work really well. Try it and see!
