Your hallway is the first thing that welcomes you when you come home, and the first thing that a potential buyer will see when they consider buying your home. That’s why it’s important to maximise the space available. After all, first impressions count!
Here’s how to ensure your hallway isn’t just dead space in your home:
Flooring
If your hallway has a hard floor, a rug is a great way to add texture, protect your floor from marks and scratches and add some colour. It can also create the illusion of space because of the parallel lines it creates along the hall, drawing the eye to follow the length of the hall. This makes it appear longer.
Walls
If you don’t have furniture in your hallway, add some colourful pictures or photographs – or create a gallery with framed prints all over the wall. Mirrors are a great way to add light to the space, so either hang one large mirror or some contrasting designs for a more eclectic look.
Coats and shoes
If you have limited space, a coat or shoe rack can make the floor space seem smaller and the hallway more cluttered, especially as they tend to be overloaded with coats for all seasons. An alternative option is to place some hooks on the walls at varying heights to free up the floor space
Lighting
Bright lighting will make your hallway seem instantly bigger! The tendency is to go for some mood lamps but this only makes the space seem smaller, especially in the winter when the natural light available is low. Think about a feature light to give your hallway some design flair of its own and give the space something unique.
Declutter
It’s tempting to use your hallway for storage – bikes, shoes, coats, umbrellas, school bags….it can fast become a dumping ground. Go minimal and declutter, finding alternative storage solutions for these items. You can even make a feature out of your bike buy mounting it on the wall!
Bring the outside, inside!
Plants and flowers on some well placed shelves will make your hallways seem instantly warm and welcoming.
