Understanding Broadband

Most households are hooked up to the World Wide Web these days, however with an array of speeds, providers and packages on offer, it can be tricky to decide the right deal for you. Here we unpick all the details to help you decide, potentially save money and get connected.

The low-down on broadband speeds

Broadband speed is measured in megabits per second (Mbps), relating to the speed in which data is transferred. A high number means more data transferred per minute and higher speed, though it’s worth bearing in mind that providers usually refer to ‘up to 67 Mbps’, for example, and that the actual speed in your area might be slower than this. You can check the broadband speed in your area provided your internet provider via various checkers online.

Which broadband is right for you?

ADSL

This broadband utilises existing BT cables, so most areas of the UK will have access to it. Providers include BT, EE, Plusnet, Virgin Media and Sky. This type of broadband will suit most households who need internet connection for things like emailing and social media, though if there are lots of people who want to connect at once, you may notice that the connection slows.

Cable

If you are after the fastest connection possible, fibre-optic cable broadband is an ideal option, with the main providers being BT and Virgin Media. It can give you broadband speeds of up to 200Mbps (though remember this may be lower where you live) and could be put for good use for streaming music, video or gaming. It is only available in certain area, though you can register interest in getting it installed with certain providers.

Mobile

Mobile networks offer 3G and 4G mobile broadband which you can access via a mobile phone, a dongle, a USB or a laptop with a specially embedded SIM card – great if you are on the move a lot. Providers include Vodafone, EE, 02 and Three. Usually contracts limit you to a monthly download limit and connection can be less reliable than home broadband.

Satellite

If you live in a remote area with limited cable network, satellite broadband is a good option for you. The technology has improved in recent years offering speeds up to 22 Mbps, though installation can still be pricey. Gaming and streaming can be slower connecting this way however.

Choosing your ideal broadband package

After researching the available broadband options, there will be various packages to choose from available from different providers. You can use online comparison sites to find the most affordable options and consider getting a bundle deal that could provide you with TV, telephone and mobile services too. If you find a better deal than you are currently on, or are moving home for example, you can switch providers, though cancellation fees will usually apply, particularly if you are part way through an existing contract.

You can also arrange to switch with the same provider to a new address, though give them plenty of notice to avoid delays in being reconnected and keep in mind there may be a small admin charge. Happy surfing!
