It has been a challenging year for many of us and with the news of a vaccine on the horizon one thing we can do is hope that next year we will get back to some form of normality. As we approach Christmas, it’s important that we try to remain positive even if we can’t socialise like we usually do, or spend Christmas Day with our loved ones. Make this Christmas a time for reflection and creating memories that will make it a season to remember for all the right reasons.
Here are some ways to make this Christmas memorable:
Rather than fixate on what Christmas should be like, try and focus on what will make it a special time. It’s not often that we have the time and space to enjoy our homes and our immediate family without rushing around, meeting social obligations and arranging our schedule around work, family, school, social events, religious celebrations etc. Instead of travelling to relatives and rushing around the shops, you can stay at home and enjoy some quiet time. If you’re struggling, write a list each night of what you do have that makes you happy – this has been proven to be an effective mood booster.
Connect with people
Many of us have spent more time at home with our immediate family and this can place strain on relationships. Make a plan of who you’re going to connect with over the festive season even if it’s over Zoom or House Party. Keep relationships going by checking in on your friends and family, who could be struggling too.
Make new traditions
We all have traditions that we could be missing out on – perhaps you see a certain family member on Christmas Eve, Boxing Day or New Year’s Eve or attend, see certain groups of friends for drinks or a meal, or go to your office Christmas do. Rather than focus on the loss – or temporary hold – of your usual traditions, try and create new ones that give you a sense of happiness. Whether it’s a game night with the family, a Zoom party call with friends or movie night there are things you can do to lift your spirits.
Decorate!
This year the shelves have been bare of Christmas lights and decorations as many people have gone all out to make their homes extra Christmassy. Cheer yourself up by getting an extra tree, putting up extra lights and making your home cosy and festive. If you can’t find any decorations – get the kids involved and make your own!
Remember, this is temporary
Remember that this is a crisis and as such, it’s temporary. Although this year will be different, it will come to pass and there is light at the end of the tunnel. Have hope this Christmas and whatever your beliefs or traditions, embrace the good to have come out of this difficult year. Looking forward to next year, think about what would make you happy and start making a plan of what you want to be different and how you can achieve this. Maybe a new home, job or other life change.
