The Do’s and Don’ts of Interior Design

From too much clutter to furniture that doesn’t fit, make sure you avoid these common mistakes when decorating your home. The result will be a space that you love to be in, and a home that will appeal to others when the time comes to sell up and move on.

Don’t let clutter take over

There’s nothing worse for making your room appear small and cramped than clutter! When you next redecorate, take into account how much storage you’ll need and where everything is going to go – this is a great opportunity to not only have a clear out but also to find some storage solutions to give your room a more steamlined appearance and better sense of space.

Do mix things up a bit

You may have a colour theme, but don’t go over the top and make everything in the room match. Sometimes when it comes to colour, less is more. Red curtains, walls, tiles, accessories…sometimes it’s too much. Instead, either find complementing colours or consider using an accent colour in just one or two areas like the image above, so that you can easily change the colour scheme in the future.

Don’t forget to measure before buying furniture

Whatever your room size, shape or purpose, make sure that your furniture fits properly. A large sofa can dominate a small room and make it awkward to navigate the space, and a rug or mirror that’s too small can look lost. When you shop for furniture plot the floor space they will take up before hitting that order button!

Do get the lighting right

Good lighting is so important especially here in Scotland when the autumn and winter months mean prolonged periods of darkness. Think about the size of your room and the required lighting, for example, a bright cold light in a cosy room is too stark, and soft low lighting in a kitchen could mean you can’t properly see what you’re eating! Consider the areas most in need of light and whether lamps, wall lights or spotlights would work best.

Don’t have too much contrasting patterns in one room

Many designers will mix different patterns in a room, but it’s hard to get right if you don’t have an expert eye. You can mix large and small florals or stripes and checks but make sure it doesn’t confuse the eye. The rule of thumb is not to mix any more than three patterns within a room.

Do choose the right artwork

Artwork is a very personal thing, and you must only have pieces in your home that you love and that are a reflection of who you are, after all you’re the one looking at it every day! It’s important to consider where you will hang your pictures as traditionally, the bottom of a wall hanging or picture should sit eight to 10 inches above a piece of furniture but you could go off piste and mix it up a bit like the picture above.

Don’t go overboard with the cushions

Most homes will have a mix of comfy cushions, but make sure you don’t have too many on your bed or sofa and make sure they work with your colour scheme!
