As we head into the autumn and winter months, we are noticing some interior design trends emerging in homes across Scotland.
After an unsettling few years, one of the biggest trends this year has been to create a comfortable, cosy escape from the outside world. A restful space has informed our choice of colours, materials and layout. Health and wellbeing are at the forefront of our minds, along with energy efficiency following the rise in the energy price cap.
Green homes
As well as eco-friendly ‘green’ homes, the colour green has increased in popularity too. Green helps us to connect with nature and bring the outside in. The colour has been combined with natural materials and can be seen not just in wall colours but in our furniture choices, soft furnishings and plants throughout the home. Paired with pinks, yellow and coral – green can add warmth and interest to your home.
Cottagecore
A new term, this has become increasingly commonplace to describe rural life with traditional ideals, artisan pieces and a more sustainable lifestyle. It incorporates wildflowers, vintage elements, stone fireplace, and crafting – helping people to connect to a simpler life to help you feel grounded within your home.
Copper
Copper has taken over from brushed brass this year as it gives a striking yet warm finish to kitchens, bathrooms and living spaces. This is a beautiful hue to add to the home, and it works well with wood, marble and granite.
Vintage
Although this trend never seems to wane, we have increasingly taken to upcycling items for our homes as part of the new sustainable lifestyle we are all trying to adopt. From scouring online marketplaces to visiting antique shops, homeowners are investing in beautiful antiques and vintage pieces.
Neutrals
Over recent years bold colours have been popular in our homes, with maximalism taking centre stage. But this seems to be waning for 2022 in favour of softer shades and neutrals.
Restful blue
Another colour that has been popular – especially in kitchen design – is blue. From rich navy tones on kitchen cupboards to soft, calm blues to breathe life into our living spaces, it is echoed by colour trend predictions from Dulux, who chose Bright Skies, a pale blue shade, as its colour of the year 2022.
Statement lighting
Large, dramatic lamps, wall lights, pendants and chandeliers are all increasingly popular as the days become shorter, and the nights draw in. It helps us to create a beautiful ambience for living and working at home.
