According to the latest government figures, millions of homeowners across the UK believe their home is energy efficient when, in fact, their home has a poor EPC rating. Approximately 59% of homes had an EPC rating between D and G – with A being the highest and G being the lowest.
A study of 2,000 homeowners revealed that 72% believed their home was energy efficient, and 84% believed their energy rating would be C or above. Instead, the study revealed that they were incorrect, leaving them vulnerable to higher energy bills.
Despite this finding, nearly half of all homeowners took action last year to make their homes more energy efficient by making home improvements to mitigate the rising energy cost.
In addition to energy efficiency, the study also looked at food waste and how householders perceive the issue. It was revealed that 23% of people admitted they felt guilty about throwing away food, and 56% tried to reduce food waste. This included eating leftovers, freezing food before it went out of date and planning rather than making ad-hoc trips to the supermarket.
Regarding energy usage, 14% of those surveyed felt guilty about leaving electrical items on standby, and 18% felt guilty about leaving on lights. By changing these simple habits, homeowners could save over £2,000 per year.
With the rising cost of living at the forefront of everyone’s minds, Skipton Group commissioned the study to mark the expansion of its free EPC report to its members to help them understand how to improve the energy efficiency of their homes and minimise their bills.
Knowing accurately how energy efficient your home is and how to improve its energy efficiency is key to reducing your outgoings, especially as the price cap guarantee is set to change this month, making energy costs more expensive for most. This research shows that there is a knowledge gap when it comes to EPC ratings and the energy efficiency of our homes.
Even making small changes can make a big difference to your bills, improving your quality of life and even boosting the value of your home when the time comes to sell.
