Making your Home Energy-Efficient

With that in mind, it’s a good idea to get the best EPC rating for your home if you’re considering selling. If you have just moved, it’s a good way to reduce your monthly bills, which are set to rise again this year.

Insulation

Most heat in the home is lost through the roof, windows and flooring. That’s why it’s essential that you have sufficient insulation to prevent costly heat from escaping. By ensuring you have sufficient insulation in your loft, you can avoid as much as 25% of heating from escaping. In addition, cavity wall insulation can prevent 35% of heat from being lost.

Another way that heat can escape from your home is from inefficient windows. Many older properties are single-glazed or have old wood frames with gaps and poor insulation. Double or triple-glazed windows can help your home retain heat, preventing you from turning up your thermostat.

Boiler

Most boilers have a life span of around 7-10 years. After this time, they are less efficient, and properties with a boiler over 10 years old will be much more costly to heat.

Schemes available via your local council will give you money for a boiler replacement if it’s over seven years old. In addition, you might be entitled to additional help if you claim benefits.

The boiler replacement scheme will stipulate that you require cavity wall insulation as part of the process, as this will give your home additional insulation. You may also be entitled to grants for air-source heat pumps, ground-source heat pumps and other renewable heating systems. You can apply through your local council.
