Living locally in Bothwell
Bothwell is situated in South Lanarkshire, around 7 miles (11 km) south-east of Glasgow city centre, and is home to around 6,450 residents. Bothwell’s main street is known for independent boutique shopping outlets and good quality cafes, restaurants and trendy bars. Bothwell Castle is a great day out and a fine example of Scottish Gothic architecture. The countryside around is well-used for its nature trails and wildlife spotting, while nearby Bothwell Castle golf club is a good quality course for golf enthusiasts.
Bothwell has good commuter links, being easily accessible from the M74 motorway, with bus routes to and from Glasgow and Motherwell and railway stations in nearby Blantyre and Uddingston.

Lanark/ Clyde Valley
Lanark is the county town of Lanarkshire, though remains one of the smaller towns in the area with a population of 8,253. Many of the town’s residents commute the 26.8 miles (43 km) to work in Glasgow and there are regular rail and bus services available.
There are three main primary schools and one secondary school in Lanark, with local amenities such as shops, cafes and supermarkets.
The Clyde Valley tourist route takes in some fantastic scenery and has various cafes along the way. As part of this route, a restored cotton mill and World Heritage Site, New Lanark, is a popular visitor destination just a couple of miles away. Around New Lanark are lovely walking routes up to the impressive Falls of Clyde waterfalls.
Hamilton, South Lanarkshire, is the fourth largest town in Scotland with a population of 53,188. The town is 12 miles (19 km) south of Glasgow and is just west of the M74, the main road link south to England.
Hamilton has two railway stations, Hamilton Central and Hamilton West and the bus station links to surrounding towns. There are three comprehensive high schools in the town as well as the University of the West of Scotland campus.
There is a vibrant pub and bar scene in the city to enjoy. Chatlerault Country Park, 2.5 miles away, is great for countryside strolls. Hamilton race course has a racing season from May to October each year and there are football, tennis, bowling, rugby and cricket facilities at the Hamilton Palace Sports Ground, beside the Mausoleum.
Motherwell is a large town in North Lanarkshire and one of Scotland’s most populated areas, with 30,311 residents.
Beside the M74 and three miles away from the M8, Motherwell is very accessible by road and also has three rail stations and a bus station. The town has various primary schools and a choice of high schools, including Dalziell high school.
Nearby you have the large Strathclyde Country Park, containing many sports and recreation facilities and being ideal for bird watching and anglers. M and Ds - Scotland’s only theme park – is just 3 miles (4.8 km) away and Amazonia, a tropical house home to exotic species, is also part of Strathclyde Country Park. Ravenscraig Sports Centre offers a top-class athletics track and sports facilities.
Scotland’s first new town, East Kilbride is the largest town in South Lanarkshire, 8 miles (13 km) south of Glasgow. The population is 74, 411.
There are good road and rail links, with trains departing from Glasgow Central Station every half hour. The original design divided the town into small, self-container areas, with local shops and primary schools, although newer developments have departed from this model. “The Centre” is what local people call the large shopping centre in town, comprising of 6 shopping malls.
Airspace, a chain of trampolining and freestyle jumping centres, have a facility in East Kilbride. On the outskirts of the town there is also Calderglen Country Park and James Hamiton Heritage Park, great for walking and biking.
